Is America a Force for Good in the World?

With the “liberation” of Libya from the grip of Muammar Gadhafi, progressives like E. J. Dionne and other cheerleaders for this administration are hailing the joint US-NATO operation as a new model for American intervention – an exemplar of the “good” way to push our weight around on the international stage, as opposed to the “bad” way pursued by George W. Bush and the neoconservatives in Iraq. As Glenn Greenwald points out, the same triumphalist message  being trumpeted by this administration’s supporters over Libya  was uncritically broadcast by the “mainstream” media in the wake of “mission accomplished” in Iraq.

That reality will soon intrude, and correct this “irrational exuberance” – as a certain Federal Reserve chairman would put it – is an absolute certainty. Indeed, a few skeptical voices are already being raised, notably Patrick Cockburn, reporting from Benghazi:

“Any black African in Libya is open to summary arrest unless he can prove that he was not a member of Colonel Gadhafi’s forces… The rebels claim that many of Colonel Gadhafi’s soldiers were black African mercenaries. Amnesty International says these allegations are largely unproven and, from the beginning of the conflict, many of those arrested or, in some cases, executed by the rebels were undocumented laborers caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“But there is no doubt that all black Africans are now under suspicion. The head of the militia in Faraj, a short bearded man in a brown robe named Issam, explained how well-prepared local insurgents had taken over the area on 19 August, telling Colonel Gadhafi’s supporters to hand over their weapons and stay at home. There was almost no resistance from the demoralized regime and few people had been arrested. Then Issam added, as an aside, that his men had also detained ‘tens of Africans whom we sent off to prison.’ He did not explain why they had been jailed.”

Across “liberated” Libya, black Africans are being rounded up by the rebel forces, and often either summarily executed or else imprisoned. See here, here, and here for more disgusting evidence of the rebels’ anti-black campaign.

Gadhafi reportedly hired African mercenaries to fight for his regime, and this is the ostensible reason why the rebels are rounding up blacks, but this explanation seems more like an excuse than an actual reason in view of the fact that there have been periodic anti-black riots in the country, notably in 2000

The idea that American imperialism could be a force for “good,” with a “progressive” president holding the reins, was never very convincing. But even I never expected to be confronted with the ultimate irony: the first African-American President appears to be responsible, in part, for a large scale anti-black pogrom. This is his signal foreign policy “accomplishment” – a mass lynching.

We have truly entered Bizarro World.

One could argue, however, that this is not the fault of the Obama administration, since it was their Libyan proxies, and not US troops, who committed that particular atrocity. We can still see the US as a force for “good” in the world, albeit not without morally complex anomalies to factor into the equation. Well, tell that to the people of Ishaqi, a village in Iraq, where  US troops recently conducted a raid:

“Witnesses in the village of Ishaqi, just south of Tikrit, said Iraqi and American forces opened fire on civilians and threw grenades early Friday as they conducted the raid. The villagers said the forces were responding to gunfire from people in the village and then fired back, killing a 13-year-old boy and an off-duty police officer.”

The American authorities are currently stonewalling, denying any responsibility for the deaths, and claiming it was an Iraqi operation – although they admit US forces entered the scene when “fighting broke out.” One has to wonder, however, how a 13-year-old boy and a police officer came to be the targets – are these are the “terrorists” we’re supposedly fighting in Iraq,  whose presence requires an extended American stay?

It’s an irony that this latest incident – which has   further complicated Washington’s efforts to persuade the Iraqis they need our continued presence – took place in Ishaqi, the scene of yet another infamous US atrocity in 2006. As Antiwar.com’s John Glaser was the first to report earlier this week:

“As revealed by a State Department diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks last week, US forces committed a heinous war crime during a house raid in Iraq in 2006, wherein one man, four women, two children, and three infants were summarily executed. The cable excerpts a letter written by Philip Alston, Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary, or Arbitrary Executions, addressed to then Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. American troops approached the home of Faiz Harrat Al-Majma’ee, a farmer living in central Iraq, to conduct a house raid in search of insurgents in March of 2006.

“’It would appear that when the MNF [Multinational Forces] approached the house,’ Alston wrote, ‘shots were fired from it and a confrontation ensued’ before the ‘troops entered the house, handcuffed all residents and executed all of them.’ Mr. Faiz Hratt Khalaf, (aged 28), his wife Sumay’ya Abdul Razzaq Khuther (aged 24), their three children Hawra’a (aged 5) Aisha ( aged 3) and Husam (5 months old), Faiz’s mother Ms. Turkiya Majeed Ali (aged 74), Faiz’s sister (name unknown), Faiz’s nieces Asma’a Yousif Ma’arouf (aged 5 years old), and Usama Yousif Ma’arouf (aged 3 years), and a visiting relative Ms. Iqtisad Hameed Mehdi (aged 23) were killed during the raid. Alston’s letter reveals that a US air strike was launched on the house presumably to destroy the evidence, but that “autopsies carried out at the Tikrit Hospital’s morgue revealed that all corpses were shot in the head and handcuffed.”

A five-year-old, and a child of five months – shot in the head while handcuffed?

I wrote about this incident in 2006, shortly after the news came out, in response to a piece by Peter Beinart, then editor of The New Republic. Polemicizing against Bill Kristol’s view that the Abu Ghraib inquiry was unnecessary, Beinart argued the investigation showed that, while war is necessarily a horrific business, our wars are different because we hold ourselves to a higher moral standard. As I wrote back then:

“In Ishaqi, 11 villagers were slaughtered after American troops packed them into a small room, burned three vehicles, killed a herd of livestock, and then ordered an air strike on the house so as to bury all evidence of their crime. The military has just announced their ‘exoneration.’ This ‘underscores the liberal vision,’ all right – but only in the Bizarro World of Beinart and his neocon buddies.

“The big debate between Beinart and the neocons is over what constitutes the true ‘American exceptionalism.’ What ‘proves it,’ says Beinart, is that we move quickly to punish evildoers in uniform, and make sure that ‘justice’ is done. Except when it isn’t, in Ishaqi, for instance – and even if the eventual triumph of truth is made possible by non-American investigators.”

They tried to cover up their crimes in Ishaqi, first by blowing the crime scene to smithereens, and then by launching a phony “investigation” that officially exonerated US troops and their commanders.

As it turned out, the eventual triumph of truth was made possible by Wikileaks, whose founder, Julian Assange, is being harried by the US and its European allies, and detained on trumped-up charges, while an American grand jury compiles evidence to prosecute him. On the other hand, the child-killing sadists in the US military roam free.

If “American exceptionalism” means anything in this context, it is in the telling details: after all, if you’re going to kill a five year old, why handcuff her?

“This horrible story,” wrote Beinart in 2006, speaking about another atrocity, this one in Haditha, “powerfully underscores the liberal vision, which is this:

“We are not angels: without sufficient moral and legal restrictions, and under conditions of extreme stress, Americans can be as barbaric as anyone. What’s makes us an exceptional nation with the capacity to lead and inspire the world is our very recognition of that fact. We are capable of Hadithas and My Lais, so is everyone. But few societies are capable of acknowledging what happened, bringing the killers to justice, and instituting changes that make it less likely to happen again. That’s how we show we are different from the jihadists. We don’t just assert it. We prove it. That’s the liberal version of American exceptionalism, and it’s what we need right now in response to this horror.”

Beinart was wrong then, and he’s wrong now. Child murder, racist pogroms – what’s next, the liquidation of the kulaks

The vast gulf between what America was, and what it has become, can be measured by the distance between Beinart’s uplifting rhetoric about “American exceptionalism” and the degraded reality of handcuffed children murdered by US soldiers. What we were was admired, and even loved, by freedom-seeking people the world over: what we have become is rightly hated by those same freedom-starved peoples.

The history of the last decade or so proves, beyond the shadow of a doubt,  that the US government, far from being this great liberating force,  the greatest factor for good in the international equation, is instead a force for naked evil. It isn’t that “we are not angels,” it’s that we’re devils. It’s as simple as that.

is usa a force for good? HHHHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLL NNNNNNOOOOOOOOO

now if it did the right thing and rid itself, and the middle east/islamic nations of the parasitic jewish terrorists then it would be able to call itself a force for good.

Is America a Force for Good in the World?

YES, of course, and absolutely a force of good for Apartheid Israel and for the benefit of Wallstreet! Bank Gangsters.

“A five-year-old, and a child of five months – shot in the head while handcuffed?

America was never a force of good anywhere in the world, and in particular in the Americas, and in all the 100 countries or so it has killed, maimed, bombed, raped, for the past centuries, including its participation and financing of the Russian Revolution, WWI, WWII and other abominable wars that it is still conducting to this very day with the complicity of other Western and non Western Allies.

    AMERIKA/USRAEL;TODAY’S (WORLD’S) HOLOCAUST…

    http://aangirfan.blogspot.com/

This car is a Maybach costing $1 million. Rush Limbaugh, who has 5 homes in Palm Beach, owns six Maybachs. (richest 400 people)

According to a study by the firm Deloitte, the rich elite in the USA now have $38.6 trillion.

In addition, they have an estimated $6.3 trillion hidden in offshore accounts.

So, the top 0.1% of the US population have $46 trillion in wealth.

(Analysis of Financial Terrorism in America.)

David DeGraw has written “Who Really Rules: America’s Hidden Oligarchs Revealed”

    According to McGraw:

    1. Deloitte reckons that the rich elite will have over $100 trillion within the next ten years.

    2. The richest 1% of the US population have more wealth than 90% of the population combined.

    3. According to an investment manager (an analysis):

“Most of the serious economic damage the US is struggling with today was done by the top 0.1% and they benefited greatly from it….

“For example, in Q1 of 2011, America’s top corporations reported 31% profit growth and a 31% reduction in taxes, the latter due to profit outsourcing to low tax rate countries….

“The year 2010 was a record year for compensation on Wall Street, while corporate CEO compensation rose by over 30%.…

“In 2010 a dozen major companies, including GE, Verizon, Boeing, Wells Fargo, and Fed Ex paid US tax rates between -0.7% and -9.2%.

“Production, employment, profits, and taxes have all been outsourced….

“A highly complex and largely discrete set of laws and exemptions from laws has been put in place by those in the uppermost reaches of the US financial system.

“It allows them to protect and increase their wealth and significantly affect the US political and legislative processes…

“The American dream of striking it rich is merely a well-marketed fantasy that keeps the bottom 99.5% hoping for better and prevents social and political instability.

“The odds of getting into that top 0.5% are very slim and the door is kept firmly shut by those within it.”

    4. Here are some of the rich elite:

Former Goldman Sachs CEO and Bush Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson.

Current Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein.

    Goldman’s President Gary Cohn.

    Citigroup CEO Vikram Pandit.

JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon.

    H. Edward Hanway, former chief executive of Cigna (Health Insurance)

Ron Williams of Aetna Inc. (Health Insurance)

There are also the bosses of the companies involved with oil and war.

    5. In 1995, the richest 400 Americans paid 30% of their income in taxes.

In 2011, they now pay only 18%.

1,470 Americans earned over $1 million in 2009 and didn’t pay any taxes.

    6. Che Guevara said:

“The amount of poverty and suffering required for the emergence of a Rockefeller, and the amount of depravity that the accumulation of a fortune of such magnitude entails, are left out of the picture, and it is not always possible to make the people in general see this.”

    We have a Neo-Feudal-Fascist state.

The global economic top one-tenth of one percent, are genocidal fascists carrying out a holocaust.

    Fascism has evolved.

There is no need to get blood on your hands while rounding up people and putting them into concentration camps when you can do it through economic policy while sitting in a jacuzzi on a corporate jet, or in a three-piece custom-made Armani, completely detached and insulated from the world in which you plunder.

Susan Lindauer: FORMER CIA ASSET ON IRAK/LIBYA. HER FRIEND TELLS THE TRUTH

    Susan Lindauer:

    June 8, 2011 – 3:21 pm

Hey guys! This response is from Joanna Moriarty herself. She asked me to post it for her.

    Joanna says:

“We have so much documentation that it make your head spin. We spoke with 250 rebels who were released by the Tribal Leaders with the blessings of Ghadafi, the stories they tell of the atrocities that they did are horrifying we have them on tape. We also have many rebels that are documented admitting all the atrocities that they themselves committed. But, here is one truth that is irrefutable – the 2000 tribes of Libya are the actual government here, if anyone does not know this then they do not know Libya. These tribal leaders released 150 rebel prisoners 3 weeks ago, 10 days later another 250 were released. There were about 20 foreigners that witnessed this magnificent show of forgiveness, we have this on tape. There is another release of 200 prisoners in these coming days.

Go to Benghazi and you will not find one single prisoner because they have all been killed. This is a hard fact. Anyone that says they interviewed prisoners in Misurata is a liar. The Misurata prisoners that were released said that they were paid 2500 dinar for every soldier they killed and another 1000 dinar for burning the bodies. This is why there are no prisoners, so who is believable 250 prisoners on tape or someone who will not even give his name and makes statements that are unbelievable and unverifiable.

Here in Tripoli, the people say, please tell them to come to Tripoli and speak to us but they will not come because they don’t want the truth. They would like to ask these liars to PROVE what they say, they say none of their lies can be proved. Yesterday was Ghadafi’s birthday, they bombed the H*** out of this place yesterday, many many people crying and big damage, but they are not breaking the back of these people. They had parties and shot off fireworks for 3 hours, we were invited to a wedding because they wanted to show us how life continues here and they celebrate life every day.

This man says no complaints about NATO in the East , what kind of idiot is he? NATO is not bombing the rebels, NATO is working for the rebels- this is complete and utter bullsh***. People don’t dare complain about the rebels, they are scared for their lives and their family lives, we have met many people who have escaped these place with their lives, but most don’t want their names out because they have family left there and if they show their face or publically speak about the rebel atrocities then the members of their families that are left will be killed. We know this from first hand, one of our group had this exact problem and could not be filmed, his father called him and said the rebels saw him on TV and if he spoke out one more time against them they would kill his brother one by one and then begin with his other family members.

Today we went to the Roxis hotel to meet with some very important officials, on our way out, there was a large group of women and children holding signs up that said “tell the TRUTH”, “thank you Qatar for killing our people”, “thank you NATO for destroying our country”. WE love the leader of our revolution, M. Ghadafi. I stopped and took photos and the women came up to me instantly, they thought I was a reporter as all the reporters stay in the Roxis Hotel. They were quite angry and said, TELL THE TRUTH, we want to see the TRUTH outside of Libya we are sick of the lies. One lady had a very small boy with her (maybe 3 years old) he was dressed in a military outfit, he was black, she said you see my son, even our children will fight against this terror, we will never accept NATO or the rebel RATs.

This is literally everywhere in Tripoli, tonight thousands were on First of September street in support of their revolutionary leader.

In all the time (5.5 years) we have come here we have never heard of oppression by Ghadafi, the people have great respect and love for him. They all wear green and wear photos of him around their necks, believe me the Western news is so far from the truth they are on another planet. We have never seen anybody beaten, harassed, in prison, in fact we have been days and never even seen a policeman unlike our trips to Cairo where armed guards are on every corner, with tanks around Mosques on Fridays. Believe us, before this mess, it was safer in Tripoli than in Houston.

I don’t believe that this man was even in Libya, I dare him to bring forward this soldier who claimed all this terrible things – he cannot do it. This is not the Libyan way, they don’t pass out Viagra, this is from the Western mind – I may explode before long, cannot suffer fools lightly and these people have mouths that are not connected to souls.

The final two verifiable truths about the atrocities committed by NATO and the Rebels and the US and UK are:

    1. The leader of a tribe of 1 million Libyans living in Benghazi was brutally murdered in his home by the rebels after a kangaroo court which was broadcast in the news on TV here in Libya by Dr. Shakeer. The million people tribe wanted to retaliate against all the rebels, the other tribal leaders and Ghadafi told them please do not kill all these people as there has already been too much bloodshed in Libya. Does this sound like a tyrant?

    2. Two days later another pro Ghadafi person was murdered, his head was cut off and placed at the door step of the security office in Dharna (he was a tribal leader) the outrage by most of the population in Dharna was expressed in demonstrations of disgust against the rebels and at the end of the day, the green flag of the legitimate government of Libya was flying. The three major tribes in Dharna proclaimed that they had had enough of the death at the hands of these rats and the Council of Shame as they call the revolution council in Benghazi.

All of these facts are true and verifiable by video and by affidavit of those present, this liar cannot prove one thing that he is saying.

The word of some paid CIA mercenary is not worth ****.

Susan believe us when we say, we have huge amounts of documentation, we are collecting it every day. We must file war crime charges against Obama, Sarkozy, Cameron, and NATO.

Question the Libyans constantly ask is: “Who are these countries to dictate who our leader should or should not be, we will pick our own leader, we ask for a vote, let us vote and then you will see who should be our leader.” NATO will never dictate to us, if they impose their puppet leader upon us, we will have another revolution and throw him out, he will not last one week.

The biggest population is Libya as you know, is in the west, the more NATO rains down destruction upon them the more they back Ghadafi. These are a strong and resilient people, they have an ancient culture and they are an endangered species. Misinformation is the tool of the West not Libya. We have nothing to gain by helping these people (except our souls). One cannot stand by and witness this type of tyranny without doing everything possible to stop it.

God Bless them, I pray they will survive this siege that is upon them.

    Answer:

    Yes. That’s true.

$500 trillion is an extremely conservative estimate. Its based on an assumption of only an 8% return on their holdings since 1931, when some speculate the return is near 100% per annum.

AMERICA is just a symptom of our own diseased HEART! Today’s humans are manipulated by COMPUTER GRAPHICS that animate their film industry and the robots that run their factories and their minds are unable to think clearly. THEIR BRAIN IS DEAD OR HALF DEAD!

Battling against the Devil requires superhuman qualities but most of us have none of them. We have become very superficial beings unworthy to be called humans anymore. Our Gods are fake; our religions are fake; we are ourselves undeserving to live as humans; so, our total destruction is INEVITABLE!

It looks like we have all been created by the Devil and not by GOD! This is the experience of life that I am going to take to my grave, unfortunately. It seems that I have at last the answer to the great questions of life.

WE WILL NEVER KNOW FOR SURE WHY HUMANS CAME INTO EXISTENCE AS THEY HAVE PROVED THEY HAVE NO MISSION, NO PURPOSE, NOT EVEN GOD, BUT ONLY A WRETCHED END!

If GOD has not been able to prove that HE is a FORCE for good in the world, how can we expect America or any country in the world to be a force for good? That America or Israel is a force for EVIL is beyond doubt! Unless we can divorce ourselves completely from this world, there is no way we can see and understand clearly and ACT in a way that will benefit all humanity and not a select few as we are doing now.

Humans in the West are living in concentration Camps and in smaller and smaller living space LIKE ANIMALS IN CAGES with cameras and other devices spying each and every move they make because of the Bank Gangsters who own and control almost everything and THEY CANNOT SEE THAT! And that cancer is spreading fast in the non Western countries.

JESUS CHRIST WAS ONCE A FORCE FOR GOOD IN THE WORLD, WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM? WHO BRAGGED OF HIS EXECUTION ON THE CROSS?

The same killers and genocidal murderers are in action today and what do we hear? PEACE TALKS, PEACE PROCESS, NEGOCIATIONS AND ACCORDS with the Devil, that is, the real anti-Semites, and so on!

    “@BAFS : I wasn`t the one who called anyone Jihadists,…”

    SORRY, Love

I am sure I read your post stating:

“now the US is getting Jihadists to carry out brutal killings in Libya,…”.

It was not clear to me that you were just quoting somebody else.

“…what would YOU call the brutal thugs who are terrorising the Libyan people?”

Before the West started the brutal and genocidal war against the Libyans I did not read about any thugs terrorising the Libyan people. Wherever the Western terrorists set their filthy murderous feet on any foreign soil they have targeted, they always used the FIFTH COLUMN that exists in most countries to carry out their dirty job.

I have some 1001 terms to describe the American butchers and their helpers, but certainly not “Jihadists”.

I am sorry if I was not quite clear, but I had to correct this misuse of the Arabic/Islamic term Jihaad, which just means STRUGGLE against the inner SELF or the outer enemy or simply the way to go about with our daily life!

CHRISTIAN AMERICA will always be a force for good in the world, but not Zionist or fanatical ‘Christian’ America.

Michael Collins Piper, Keith Johnson, Joe Cortina, Reverend Mark Dankof, Kenneth O’Keefe, MARK GLENN and thousands other Americans are showing us the way. Not supporting them 100% and not only with words will be the greatest blunder.

@BAFS : thanks for clearing that up. Jihadist is a term much used by western powers, but in a derogatory way. at least I now know what it really means. many thanks to you, and Dr. Nur, for all the valuable information..

@BAFS : thanks for clearing that up.

THAT’S what sincere and true friends do. I must admit however that sometimes I too do get carried away.
