I too knew him briefly many years ago. I was a fundamentalist Christian with some extremely limited views of the Middle East, its people, and history. I signed up for a conversational Arabic class through an Adult Ed program (through Cal State Fullerton as I recall). Alex Odeh was the teacher. He was a warm and gentle man who always referred to me as “Raymond.” I usually introduced myself as “Ray” and I have learned over the years that for some reason, the people who choose to call me by my full first name usually become people whom I grow to care about and to trust. This was certainly the case with Alex Odeh.

Within the first class or two, I took him up on his offer, weekly extended to all of his students, to join him for dessert and coffee after class. Sitting in a local restaurant week after week and having him patiently dispel my ignorance, or at least serious bias, about the modern history of the modern Middle East. I was a pretty ignorant, arrogant, fundamentalist, with little basis in fact for my beliefs. I actually sometimes took notes when Dr. Odeh made statements with which I disagreed and then I ran to the library to try to find “the facts” to prove him wrong during the next post class informal “discussion.” Not once did I find him factually in error.

His gentle spirit, personal experiences, and erudition gradually led me to think more deeply about my own personal views and values. The way he used to talk about his wife & young daughters was extremely touching and humanized him in a way that would never have been possible in academic discussions in a classroom. For him the “Palestinian cause” was not politics, it was people.

I was deeply saddened when I heard of his death in 1985. I had by then earned an MA in Ancient Near Eastern Languages and Cultures from UCLA. When I read of his death, I was personally saddened, but by then I had gained the mental tools to understand why he would be killed. He was indeed the worst kind of enemy of those who opposed him and his “cause.” He was someone who personified the very values we must eliminate in our enemies in order to hate them. He was the worst kind of enemy possible, he was the very personification of what his enemies tried desperately to prove is a non-entity. He was a “good Arab” and a better human being.

With all due respect, you’re second guessing God. You’re implying that God made a mistake by infusing a brain and the ability to reason and think into its creation.

You seem to be suggesting that humanity’s desire for knowledge is somehow a flaw; that we, as a species were meant to remain ignorant of truth, ignorant of the laws of physics; ignorant of science. That’s a view which doesn’t sit well with science and never has. Copernicus and Galileo were not following God’s will when they made their world changing discoveries? The speed of light was never meant to be known? “Too intelligent for your own good”.

I might add that there is only ONE evidence of the existence of God. Only ONE, and it is in the FACT that man strives for a higher knowledge, BECAUSE there IS higher knowledge. You may view that as man’s desire to “be like the gods”. But I find it the only saving grace to keep humanity from its own destruction.

We should disregard the laws of physics and chemistry which demonstrate that the claims made in the bible are impossible. We should disregard the best archaeological explorations by PHD professors in their field which tell us that the claims made in the Bible are utterly false BECAUSE there isn’t a stone or a stick or a brick to support them. We should just take the claims made in the Bible to be true because to do otherwise would be too intelligent for our own good.

Xanadu, if the truthfulness of the Bible were decided in a court of law, it would fail at every turn. The test of truth: when one statement disagrees with another, one is false. They may both be false and probably are, but one is BY NECESSITY, false, because they cannot both be true.

Blind acceptance of church doctrine is akin to believing housewives rumors. It does nothing for humanity, in fact it is destructive to humanity. It serves only one purpose; to keep organized religion in control over mans mind; to keep him in a submissive and obedient state of superstition and fear. All of which, as we know now, are based on lies, half truths, fabrications, forgeries and myths. It wasn’t the church that brought man out of the dark ages. It was, in fact, the church that sent man INTO the dark ages. It was KNOWLEDGE that brought humanity out from under the stone of ignorance imposed by the ‘church’.

If ignorant submission to falsities is what “God” intended then you speak of a Deity which is not God. One which is selfish. One which fails, makes mistakes, takes revenge, revels in mans warring against himself, in short a Deity that takes pleasure in his creation destroying itself. The Inquisition, the Witch hunts and the Crusades are among the products of ignorant minds, superstitious minds, minds which believed without question, out of fear. Minds which were “not intelligent enough for their own good.”

God gave us brains to use them. It is also quite possible that the biblical story of creation is not true, not even in it’s allegorical form and that the Sumerian account of creation may have more credibility.

We are currently making discoveries which push man’s appearance on this planet back 200,000 years with some very curious questions to accompany these discoveries.

Tragic events like these always remind me of Albert Pike of the freemasons who over 100 years ago said something like this;

How can such individual not mention his deployment to the same people whom he had shared his sentiments about the war that he had been deployed? Seems strange!
